Most people use Gmail or Outlook because email has become something we simply expect Big Tech to provide.
I wanted to build a smaller European alternative based on a fairly simple idea: email should work with the apps you already use, your data should not finance an advertising business, and leaving again should always be possible.
So I built Skyen.live.
The free account includes:
Your own email address with 1 GB of storage
Webmail plus IMAP and SMTP
Calendar sync via CalDAV
Contact sync via CardDAV
A separate email alias
A personal Bluesky handle
Spam filtering and antivirus
No advertising, tracking or credit card requirement
You can choose between addresses such as yourname@skyen.live, @mailro.dk, @postsky.eu, @nordra.me and several others.
You do not even need an existing email address or phone number to register. Skyen gives you a unique login handle and an eight-word recovery phrase that only you keep. Your Skyen address can therefore genuinely be your first and only email account.
If you already own a domain, you can also use an address such as you@yourdomain.eu. Skyen guides you through SPF, DKIM and DMARC, and the domain remains yours if you ever decide to leave.
Skyen is built on open standards rather than a proprietary app. Use Thunderbird, Outlook, Apple Mail or another compatible client, and export or move your data whenever you want.
It is a small independent service run by me, Peter Garbæk, through my Danish company. Data is hosted in Europe under EU law, and the business model is paid subscriptions, not profiling users or selling access to their attention.
